These laws are a violation of the First Amendment and can cover up far more than animal cruelty, including food safety concerns, worker safety concerns, and environmental impacts from pollution. The Animal Legal Defense Fund is challenging these laws in court and has successfully struck down laws in Idaho, Utah, Iowa, Kansas, and North Carolina—with litigation pending in Arkansas and Iowa (which instituted subsequent laws after the first was defeated.)
