Kim Stallwood visits TIR: Center of excellence for the advancement of animal welfare law enters a new era
The Stiftung für das Tier im Recht (Foundation for the Animal in the Law; TIR) is the center of excellence for the advancement of animal welfare law in Switzerland. Its mission is to work towards the continuous improvement of the human-animal relationship in law, ethics, and society. The partnership with the renowned British author and animal rights activist Kim Stallwood is another milestone TIR hopes to use as a means of bundling and internationalizing its objectives.

Kim W. Stallwood is globally recognized as one of the pioneers of the animal rights movement. Following profound personal experiences in a chicken slaughterhouse, he committed himself to a vegan lifestyle in the 1970s. For 45 years, he has been at the forefront of various international animal welfare and animal rights organizations and has written about his experiences in several books and articles. In July 2022, his life's work and valuable private historical collection will be presented to the public at the national library of the United Kingdom – the British Library – as part of the bicentenary of the UK's Martin's Act of 1822, which is considered the cornerstone of modern animal welfare legislation throughout the world.
In October 2021, TIR was pleased to announce its close collaboration with Kim Stallwood (see media release, Oct. 20, 2021). The purpose of this collaboration is to add various historically valuable collections to the existing unique TIR library and to document the history of the human-animal relationship. The common goal is to facilitate scientific research on the treatment of animals across all disciplines and to advance the development of animal welfare law.
During a five-day visit to our office in Zurich, Kim Stallwood was introduced to the diverse and high-quality legal work of TIR. He was highly impressed by our diverse projects and fields of work, which always aim at promoting a respectful treatment of animals and at defining more clearly the constitutionally protected dignity of animals. Kim Stallwood's visit was also instructive and exciting for the TIR team - his many years of experience in the field in an international environment are both a gain in knowledge and an inspiration.
TIR will benefit greatly from this collaboration - as a competent and visionary advisor, mentor and friend, Kim will advance our diverse animal welfare goals to give animals a supporting voice in law, ethics, and society. We are very pleased to have him on our side!
