Animal welfare legislation: Animal welfare law or legal animal protection refers to all legislative measures that serve to protect animals from violations of their dignity and welfare. The legislation includes a number of laws, such as the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and the Animal Welfare Ordinance (AWO), which specifies the AWA. Then there are a number of further ordinances based on the AWA regarding various animal welfare aspects, such as the slaughtering of animals, training in animal husbandry, the keeping of livestock and domestic animals, the keeping of wild animals, as well as the keeping of animals intended for research and the production of genetically modified animals. Moreover, all cantons have implementation laws for the enforcement of the animal welfare legislation.
