2019 05 20 TIR pleased over Basel vote against "Ozeanium"
... achievement. TIR was disappointed, however, to hear about the outcome of Graubünden's vote regarding the ban on so-called special hunts ("Sonderjagd"). Graubünden's citizens rejected the proposed ban with 54.23% of the votes thereby deciding to hang on to their dual hunting system. The latter allows hunters to shoot animals for regulatory purposes even outside the official hunting season using highly unethical hunting methods. Further information: News release of October 22, 2018: TIR supports referendum against the construction of the Ozeanium in Basel

...r that the sentence was so lenient and criticizes the law enforcement authorities for failing to adequately apply the animal welfare-related penal provisions. April 4, 2019 The video sequences released last year by the animal rights organization PEA reveal serious violations of the Swiss Animal Welfare Act (AWA) by slaughterhouse employees in Avenches and Moudon. The video material shows workers handling animals very roughly and using stunning equipment improperly. This causes the animals considerable and unnecessary pain, suffering, and damage during the slaughter process and thus constitutes...

2018 06 29 TIR disappointed by the decision of the Federal Supreme Court: The DBT is denied party rights in animal welfare-related criminal proceedings
...ministration, as it was free to select the content of its work and financially independent of the Canton of Bern in exercising its party rights. According to the Supreme Court there was therefore insufficient state supervision of the umbrella association so that it could not be termed a public authority and consequently should not have been endowed with party rights. The Canton of Bern is still free to provide an authority with respective party rights, however, the DBT, being an organization established under private law, has now irreversibly lost its party rights. ...tem since 1979. She was also one of the first North American lawyers to systematically take animal rights cases to court. In her lecture, she spoke about how she got committed to animal protection and offered insights into the beginnings of the ALDF. This now renowned institution, which is active beyond American borders, began as a small organisation and only became what it is today thanks to the commitment of a handful of goal-oriented and persistent lawyers. In conclusion, Joyce emphasised the importance of promoting young talent in animal protection law.Kim Stallwood is a British author, ac...

2024 12 20 TIR Library Newsletter: Our Book Recommendation
...as pack animals, it was no longer important to empathise with them. Since then, we have regarded our intelligence or behaviour as the more valuable and even denied many animals consciousness altogether. Humans are extraordinary, there is no doubt about that, especially when you consider the technological achievements of recent decades. However, much of this has also had disastrous consequences, which has led to our ecological imbalance. There is always new evidence that animals have feelings and intentions. It must not be forgotten that animals are indispensable for the continued ex...

2022 01 27 TIR supports the people’s initiative “Basic Rights for Primates” in the canton of Basel-Stadt
...ignity of creatures was enshrined in the Federal Constitution (FC), and in 2008 the protection of animal dignity was included in the purpose clause of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Since 2003, article 641a of the Civil Code (CC) states that animals are not objects (however, apart from a few exceptions, property law still largely applies to animals) Nevertheless, the Animal Welfare Act is primarily oriented towards human user interests and permits the industrial production of animal products, as is the case everywhere in the world. Current legislation neither protects the life of animals nor ad...

2021 04 02 Egg consumption reaches new high – animal welfare lags behind
...r's egg consumption was at 189 eggs per capita on average, with a significant increase in retail demand. According to the FOAG, this was mainly due to a pandemic-related adjustment in consumption patterns: People mostly ate at home and consumed more eggs for cooking and baking. At the same time, the long-standing trend towards increasing sales of organic eggs was somewhat slowed down by the greater demand for eggs in combination with higher egg imports. The widespread opinion that the welfare of hens in this country is assured because of Switzerland's comparatively strict animal welfare legisl...

...The "primitive bee" was a solitary wasp that became a vegetarian by replacing carnal proteins with plant proteins or pollen, thus initiating the evolutionary relationship between bees and plants that continues to this day. Wasps, of which there are at least 100,000 known species, are also the ancestors of ants. In addition, the filigree wasp nest structure is said to have served as a model for paper production from cellulose, as the French physicist and zoologist René-Antoine Ferchault Réaumur noted in his animal and plant physiological works in 1719.The example of fig wasps shows that wasps a...
