From 7 to 10 August 2023, the Centre for Animal Ethics held its eighth International Summer School at Merton College, University of Oxford. The renowned Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, founded in 2006 by theology professor Andrew Linzey, is an independent institute that promotes the ethical status and practical protection of animals through academic study and public discourse. Worldwide, the Oxford Centre comprises over one hundred Fellows from around twenty countries who are researching in the fields of the natural sciences or humanities and have made an outstanding contribution to the field of animal ethics. The Oxford Centre also co-edits the Journal of Animal Ethics (JAE) with the University of Illinois and publishes its own animal ethics series with Palgrave MacMillan.
At this year's Summer School, around 150 experts from animal ethics, animal law, theology, psychology and other fields discussed various aspects of the conference theme "Animals and the Media: Communicating Ethical Perspectives on Animals". The full programme can be found here. The Foundation for the Animal in the Law (TIR) was also represented with a highly acclaimed presentation. Executive Director Dr Gieri Bolliger, who has also been a Fellow of the Oxford Centre since 2020 (see TIR news of 7 December 2020), spoke about TIR's public relations work in his presentation "Using the Media for Raising Awareness for Animals: A TIR Case Study".
