TIR gives a presentation at the international animal welfare conference in Strasbourg
The international EGALS conference "Droit et éthique de l'animal", which took place on October 21 and 22 in Strasbourg, was attended by animal welfare lawyers from all over Europe. A four-person delegation represented Tier im Recht (TIR) at the event and gave a presentation on the legal situation of animals for slaughter in Switzerland.

The legal part of the conference focused on the issue of animal slaughter. Animal welfare lawyers from France, Finland, Poland, Britain, and Switzerland provided information on the legal situation in their respective countries and the European Union.
Dr. Gieri Bolliger, executive director of TIR, gave a presentation on the legal situation in Switzerland, which is in several respects more animal-friendly than many other countries. In particular, religious slaughter – i.e. the ritualistic slaughter of animals without prior stunning – has been banned in Switzerland for over 120 years.
In a final panel discussion, the speakers responded to questions from the audience, which led to a very lively debate.
The Eurogroup for Animal Law Studies (EGALS), which organized the conference, connects animal welfare lawyers and academics from all over Europe. Dr. Gieri Bolliger, Vanessa Gerritsen, Christen Künzli, Andreas Rüttimann attended the event.
We would like to thank the organizers, in particular Jean-Marc Neuman, EGALS coordinator, and Cédric Sueur for the perfect organization of the conference and we are already looking forward to the next EGALS conference, which is planned for 2017 and is expected to take place in Scandinavia or Poland.
These universities are already offering courses in animal law.
