| Content: | Switzerland was the first country to ban battery cages for egg-laying hens, and it could potentially become the first to impose a ban on factory farming. Sentience Politics, a Swiss political think tank that has also led campaigns seeking sustainable food and primate rights, has spearheaded the “No Factory Farming in Switzerland” initiative. Launched in June 2018 with the help of other animal rights activists and organizations, the initiative received over 100,000 signatures which were submitted to the Federal Chancellery in Bern on September 17, 2019. Switzerland has a direct democracy, allowing citizens and political or social groups to propose their own ballot measures. By gathering at least 100,000 signatures within an 18-month period, citizens can propose changes to Switzerland’s Constitution. This system enables citizens to advance initiatives that may not be a priority for Parliament. In October 2019, the Federal Chancellery confirmed that Sentience Politics had submitted over 106,000 certified signatures, qualifying the initiative for submission to Parliament. |
