Dr. iur. Gieri Bolliger
is an attorney-at-law and has been working for TIR since 2000. In 2007, he became TIR's executive director.
After he published his dissertation on European Animal Law in 2000, his work became well-known far beyond Switzerland. Since then, he has worked as an editor, author and co-author and has published twelve books, including "Das Tier im Recht - 99 Facetten der Mensch-Tier Beziehung von A bis Z (2003), the guidebook "Tier im Recht transparent" (2008), the commentary "Schweizer Tierschutzstrafrecht in Theorie und Praxis" (2011), and the English book "Animal Dignity Protection in Swiss Law - Status Quo and Future Perspectives" (2016). Furthermore, he has published various expert opinions and far more than a hundred articles in expert journals on national and international animal welfare law.
In 2013, Gieri Bolliger was the first non-American lawyer to complete the postgraduate "Master of Animal Laws" (LL.M.) at the renowned Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland (Oregon/USA). In 2014/2015, he carried the status of an "International Visiting Research Scholar" at the Lewis & Clark Law School. Moreover, he holds teaching positions on animal law at the University of Zurich as well the University of Portland and regularly holds speeches on the legal aspects of the human-animal relationship at conferences and educational events in Switzerland and abroad.
For many years, Gieri Bolliger has been working as a freelancer for various print media on animal welfare issues. From 1999 to 2009, he was a member and an animal welfare delegate of Zurich's Cantonal Committee on Animal Testing and, from 2011 to 2015, of Zurich's Cantonal Animal Welfare Committee.
