CAROdog - important work in favour of stray dogs

Sick and injured road dogs, unprofessional puppy commerce and illegal dog fights are just some of the important legal questions that are not sufficiently addressed in European legislation. Several NGO's and European Institutions have collaborated to create an informative Website (www.carodog.eu) concerning the health and legal situation of dogs in different European countries. The Website aims to favour information exchange and support between the many local and national animal protection organizations. In the longer term, it hopes to support governments and other bodies in their efforts to move stray dogs back to a situation of responsible dog ownership. For the first time, EU officials are showing interest in the project, not least because of its value from an animal protection and epidemic prevention perspective. The gathering and analysis of legal data from the different countries is the first step towards coordinated action. Swiss dog law plays an important role as a model for dog marking and registration, property questions and health management issues. However, its structure of rules distributed across federal, cantonal and sometimes communal law, makes it hard to gain a clear overview of its content. Politicians, scientists, veterinarians, experts, teachers, dog trainers, animal shelters and all citizens will find pertinent information on the website, where they can exchange viewpoints and information with other specialists. The FAL welcomes this project as a great support for the promotion of responsible animal ownership in Europe.
